We work closely with each child and their families to understand parent’s questions, concerns and worries as well as each child’s strengths, challenges and experiences.

What is a Psychological Assessment?

Psychological assessments help parents and educators gain insight into a child’s unique cognitive profile, academic capacity and behavioural and socioemotional functioning. This allows the parent to make informed decisions regarding their child’s individual educational and socioemotional needs.

Does my Child need a Psychological Assessment?

There are many reasons a parent may seek an assessment for their child, including;

  • There are concerns with the child’s literacy or numeracy performance (i.e., reading, handwriting, spelling, written expression, oral language, mathematics)
  • The child is experiencing higher than expected literacy and numeracy performance
  • The child is actively avoiding, or is bored with, homework or classroom work
  • The child is having difficulty concentrating and remaining attentive
  • The child is displaying hyperactive and impulsive behaviours
  • The child is struggling to remember tasks or learn new concepts
  • The child is having difficulty organising, planning and prioritising
  • The child is exhibiting challenging behaviour at home or in the classroom
  • The child has difficulty regulating their emotion or maintaining peer relationships
  • Suspected Specific Learning Disorder (i.e., Dyslexia, Dysgraphia or Dyscalculia)
  • Suspected Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Suspected Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) or Conduct Disorder (CD)
  • Suspected Intellectual Disability (IDD, IQ lower than 70)
  • Suspected Giftedness (IQ above 130)

Do I Need a Referral for my Child?

Young people are often referred for a comprehensive assessment by Paediatricians, General Practitioners, teachers and school counsellors. However, a referral isn’t a necessity, with many parents directly seeking an assessment for their child for a variety of reasons.

How can I have my Child Assessed?

If your child is experiencing difficulties or you feel an assessment might be helpful for your child, the first step is to book an Initial Parent Consultation. This appointment is an opportunity for you to voice any concerns you have for your child and it allows the Clinical Psychologist to closely review your child’s developmental, educational, and psychosocial history. This information is essential in the development of an assessment plan tailored to your child’s presentation.
